SCIENCE OBSERVATIONS IN ROOM 15

Last week tamariki in Room 15 were making scientific observations about the absorbency of different substances when oil was applied to them.  Once they had made their observations, they had to record what they have seen.  Below are some of the observations made by the tamariki.

  • Sample D – it turned soggy, and the oil got soaked up by the dry paper towel faster than the other samples. Sample D was the most absorbent and fastest out of all the samples.

Khloe

  • I noticed that when you mix the water and oil, the water sank to the bottom and the oil rises up to the top. Also, when you mix detergent, it has the same effect but there were bubbles on the very top.

M-J

  • The kitty litter, Sample A, absorbed most of the oil and changed from white to brown. The crude oil looks like 2-minute noodle flavouring.

Rylee

  • Sample A: I noticed that it kind of looked like bird poop but it also looked looked like cat litter. It soaked up the oil and changed from white to brown.

Alivia

  • Sample A. the crude oil had these little blue balls in them.  The oil didn’t just stay still, it moved from the corner.

ROOM 15 VIDEO CHAT

It has been great to connect with tamariki in classrooms and at home through video chats.  Last week I joined Room 9 to explain how the CO2 monitor worked and read them a story and today Mrs McPeake and I joined Room 15, Cairo and Mairangi for a video chat and quiz.  I was able to give everyone a virtual tour of the new office space that is almost completed too.
